Transportation Tax Incentives

Adopting alternative technologies can be offset through transportation tax incentives.

Federal and California tax credits can provide significant savings and there is no better way to find some of these credits than through vehicle credits and emission credits. Going green is a positive trend that is gaining momentum in all areas of our lives. This includes our homes, businesses and transportation. The proof is in the number of federal and state emission credits reflecting the federal, state and local government trends of incentivizing businesses and individuals for their investment in energy efficiency.

The federal government initiated its “Cash for Clunkers” campaign in July which provided rebates of up to $4,500 per taxpayer to turn in their older, gas-guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient vehicles. The initial response was so popular that Congress had to bump the initial $1 Billion budget up to $3 Billion.

Energy tax benefits and vehicle tax incentives are more and more prominent in all of our lives. At this point in development, such incentives are necessary to partially offset the higher cost of these new technologies. Nearly all of us stand to benefit from at least some of these technologies in the long run. If you purchase a vehicle which runs on alternative fuels, either for business or your own personal use, you may be eligible for a number of vehicle tax incentives – generally in the thousands of dollars. Eligible “alternative fuels” for emission credits include: compressed or liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, hydrogen, or any liquid fuel that is at least 85 percent methanol.

California Hybrid Tax Credit

The relatively new (and ever-changing) federal and California tax incentive and hybrid tax incentive policies cover several zero emission vehicle technologies. These include fuel cell electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, hydrogen internal combustion engines, and low-speed electric vehicles.

Advanced lean burn and other alternative power vehicles are eligible for a hybrid tax incentive ranging from $400 to $2,400, depending on a number of factors such as the weight class of the vehicle and the rated fuel economy. Truck tax credits, emission credits, and fleet credits can range from $2,500 to $4,000 for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 8,500 pounds, and from $8,000 to $32,000 for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight ranging from more than 8,500 to 26,000 pounds.

The better the fuel economy of the vehicle, the higher the tax credit you'll receive. New car buyers can also receive vehicle tax incentives of $250 to $1,000 based on the vehicle's estimated lifetime fuel savings.

Going green is a positive trend gaining momentum throughout the country with the support of federal and state government agencies. Don't be left behind. The added costs of adopting these alternative technologies can be offset in whole or in part with a wide variety of federal and state tax incentives.
