The formal accounting distinction between on and off-balance sheet items can be quite detailed and will depend to some degree on management judgments, but in general terms, an item should appear on the company’s balance sheet if it is an asset or liability that the company owns or is legally responsible for; uncertain assets or liabilities must also meet tests of being probable, measurable and meaningful.

The IRS and courts will evalauate whether the parties had a legitimate written (rare) or oral (common) agreement to share the winnings. Ideally you will have a pattern of each buying tickets and sharing smaller winnings before you win the BIG ONE. Speak with a CPA or Attorney BEFORE you claim the prize. Even if one party claims the prize, there is a form to allocate between multiple winners. Best of luck and please contact me if you win!

Thanks! good info … one should plan as if you have already won and doing the math on a lump sum for taxes is STAGGERING! I have a complicated question … my partner and I are a gay couple, married in the eyes of the state, but not the federal government. If we split the earnings in two, what are those consequences … since I’ve read that the federal government questions “family members” splitting a lottery win?
